AFL broadcaster Channel 7 has bolstered its lineup ahead of this week’s preliminary finals, enlisting Collingwood veteran Scott Pendlebury for a new role within its news division. Just days after announcing the return of renowned commentator Bruce McAvaney to host the remainder of this year’s AFL finals series, the network revealed Pendlebury as their latest addition.

The 36-year-old will appear as an analyst on 7News on Thursday night and will contribute to the grand final coverage.

In a statement, Pendlebury expressed his excitement: “I’m really looking forward to joining the 7NEWS sports team for the AFL’s preliminary and grand final weeks. Achieving ultimate success requires everything to align, and every moment is crucial. I can’t wait to see how this season unfolds.”

Pendlebury, a two-time premiership player with 403 games under his belt, joins an esteemed group of broadcasters, commentators, and analysts with extensive football and media experience.

This new role could signal a potential post-playing career for the former Collingwood captain, who recently re-signed with the Magpies for a 20th season. Pendlebury has previously expressed an interest in coaching after retirement and currently serves as an assistant coach at Haileybury, a Melbourne school.

The AFL Finals Series continues on Friday with the first preliminary final between Sydney and Port Adelaide at the SCG, with the winner set to face the victor of Saturday’s match between Geelong and Brisbane in the grand final.

“September is undoubtedly the best time in the AFL calendar. This year’s competition is as tight as ever, and there will be plenty to discuss over the next three games,” Pendlebury added.
