A Detroit Lions fan was tragically killed at a tailgate party following Sunday’s win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as reported by police. The suspect is now in custody.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. ET when a confrontation escalated. During the altercation, the suspect pulled out a gun and fired at least two shots.
Another individual was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition. Detroit Police Chief James White confirmed the suspect was legally permitted to carry a firearm.
“Tailgating, drinking, and guns do not mix,” White said, as reported by Andrea May Sahouri and Jared Ramsey of the Detroit Free Press.
White also discussed potential charges, including likely murder, and criticized the lack of conflict resolution during the escalation.
In the game itself, the Lions suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 20-16 to the Buccaneers at Ford Field. Jared Goff had a strong performance with 307 yards and 34 completions but threw two interceptions, including one late in the game. Amon-Ra St. Brown led the receiving corps with 119 yards from 11 catches but left with an injury, later identified as a bruise and cramping.
On the Buccaneers’ side, Baker Mayfield shined, completing 12 of 19 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown, plus a rushing touchdown that secured the win. A crucial moment came when the Lions had 18 seconds left in the second quarter and a chance for a field goal but were penalized for having 12 men on the field, resulting in a 10-second runoff and the end of the half.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell took full responsibility for the error, stating, “The coach cost them. It was a massive error on my part.”
