In Sunday’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys, the Cleveland Browns saw starting tight end David Njoku suffer an ankle injury that’s becoming increasingly concerning. On Monday, head coach Kevin Stefanski told the media that Njoku is currently “week to week” but refrained from confirming if it’s a high ankle sprain, only stating it was an ankle issue.
According to Chris Easterling from the Akron Beacon Journal, Stefanski hinted at possibly seeking additional tight end help. With veteran Jordan Akins as the only other tight end on the active 53-man roster, a roster change seems imminent as the Browns assess their options. Stefanski mentioned they were “working through all those types of things” and noted they have available options to explore.
The Browns currently have two tight ends on the practice squad: Cameron Latu and Blake Whiteheart. Latu, a third-round pick out of Alabama in the 2023 NFL Draft, remains an intriguing option, despite not yet playing an NFL snap.
Interestingly, the Browns aren’t alone in dealing with tight end injuries, as their opponent, the Cowboys, also saw starting tight end Jake Ferguson suffer a knee sprain. However, Dallas has more depth at the position and is less likely to feel the strain.
Cleveland may need to make a roster move soon before facing the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2. Free agent C.J. Uzomah, who has AFC North experience with the Cincinnati Bengals, could be a viable option. Otherwise, the team might lean heavily on Akins for the foreseeable future.
Stefanski’s somewhat vague updates on Njoku’s condition leave the possibility of him missing multiple games open, as further tests may be underway to determine the severity and recovery timeline. For now, Akins is expected to take on the starting role.
