Jaren Hall, one of the four quarterbacks who started for the Vikings last season, couldn’t secure a spot on Minnesota’s 53-man roster this year. The Vikings waived the 2023 fifth-round pick to make room for Brett Rypien last week.

With Rypien moving from Chicago to Minnesota, Hall is getting another shot. The Seahawks are bringing him in as their unofficial third-string quarterback, according to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times. To make space, Seattle released wide receiver Easop Winston.

Hall was part of a rare four-QB rotation for the Vikings last season, joining Kirk Cousins, Joshua Dobbs, and Nick Mullens as starters. The BYU alum completed 65% of his passes with an impressive 8.4 yards per attempt. However, a concussion in his first start led to Dobbs’ quick debut after being traded, and Hall was benched in his second start—a Week 17 loss to the Packers.

Hall replaced a struggling Mullens before Week 17 but wasn’t called upon for the Vikings’ season finale. Minnesota still has Mullens on its 53-man roster, with Rypien serving as Sam Darnold’s backup. J.J. McCarthy is on IR, and the Vikings don’t have a practice squad quarterback.

Drafted 164th overall by Minnesota, Hall threw 31 touchdown passes against six interceptions in his final season at BYU, where he took over for Zach Wilson as the starter in 2021. The Seahawks had shown interest in Hall before the draft, according to ESPN’s Brady Henderson.

Now, the Seahawks will oversee Hall’s development, placing him behind Geno Smith and trade acquisition Sam Howell. Seattle had P.J. Walker in that role during training camp but released the veteran last week. Howell still has two years left on his rookie contract, while Smith is signed through 2025. The Seahawks can promote Hall to the 53-man roster up to three times before needing to use waivers, thanks to the NFLPA’s decision to reject an offseason rule change regarding QB flexibility.
