The Knicks have been proactive this season, bolstering their roster with key additions aimed at building a championship-caliber team. By securing elite defensive wings like Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby, they’ve significantly improved their depth and starting lineup, which will be on display in October.

Knicks Add Point Guard Depth

To strengthen their point guard position, the Knicks signed Cameron Payne to a one-year, $3 million contract. Payne will support Jalen Brunson, who is coming off one of the best seasons for a point guard in Knicks history. Brunson recently signed a four-year, $156 million extension with the team.

Cameron Payne’s Role and Experience

Payne brings valuable experience with 405 NBA games and 58 playoff appearances under his belt. Last season, playing for the Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers, Payne appeared in 78 games, averaging 16.7 minutes, 7.4 points, 2.6 assists, and 1.5 rebounds per game. Despite his unconventional shooting form, Payne is known for his scoring efficiency and playmaking ability.

Alternate Backup Options Considered

The Knicks also explored other options for the backup guard role, including Tyus Jones. According to Ian Begley of SNY, they offered Jones a two-year, $10 million contract. Jones, who played 66 games for the Washington Wizards last season, averaged 12 points, 7.3 assists, and 1.1 steals, with shooting percentages of .489 from the field and .414 from three-point range. Jones has been a contender for the Sixth Man of the Year award twice in the past three seasons.

Decision and Outcome

Ultimately, the Knicks chose Payne, signing him for approximately $2 million less than their offer to Jones. Jones decided to join the Phoenix Suns, where he is expected to start and further develop his distribution skills with an eye on a long-term contract.

Developing New Talent

In addition to experienced players, the Knicks also invested in future talent by drafting Tyler Kolek from Marquette in the second round. While Kolek has room to grow before making a significant impact in the NBA, his strong passing and court vision are promising. His next steps will involve improving his defense and shooting as he transitions to the professional level.
