Former Auburn Tigers quarterback Robby Ashford has suggested that Hugh Freeze wasn’t entirely honest with him during his time at Auburn. After a standout career at Hoover High School in Alabama, Ashford moved west to play for the Oregon Ducks in 2020. Despite not seeing any game action over two seasons at Oregon, he transferred back to Auburn to play under Bryan Harsin.
When Harsin was dismissed after the 2022 season, Freeze took over and brought in Payton Thorne from Michigan State, who won the starting role, leaving Ashford with limited opportunities. Ashford commented, “The only genuine competition I experienced was with Bryan Harsin during my first year at Auburn. I respect him for that. Coach Beamer also seemed sincere about competition, unlike some coaches who just blow smoke.”
Although Ashford might have been referring to Mario Cristobal as well, it’s unlikely given his age and experience at Oregon. The remaining candidate is Freeze. Ashford’s comments about “smoke being blown in my ears” could be directed at Freeze, though we can’t be sure without insight into private conversations.
During the 2023 season, Ashford had opportunities to contribute, including starting against Ole Miss and participating in various package plays. He recorded modest stats, including 22 passing yards and 27 rushing yards against Ole Miss, and five rushing touchdowns throughout the season.
Given these limited contributions, Ashford’s criticism of Freeze seems somewhat misplaced.
