Former Alabama football player Terrance Howard passed away last week from injuries sustained in a vehicular accident in North Carolina, multiple sources have reported.
Howard, a Texas native who joined the Crimson Tide as a walk-on in 2023, transferred to North Carolina Central during the off-season. He was relocating his belongings from Alabama to North Carolina when the incident occurred, according to his mother’s interview with KHOU-11 in Houston.
Alabama football coach Kalen DeBoer addressed Howard’s death at the start of his press conference in Tuscaloosa on Sunday.
“Before I speak about the team, I want to express my condolences and prayers,” DeBoer stated. “Terrance Howard, who was part of our team and later transferred to North Carolina Central, has passed away. He had teammates here who were close to him, so let’s keep him and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”
According to KPRC TV in Houston, Howard was involved in a minor accident near Salisbury, N.C., and, after getting out of his vehicle to check on the other driver, was struck by another car, resulting in critical injuries.
He was taken to a Charlotte hospital, where he later died. At the time of the accident, Howard did not have identification, delaying notification to his family.
Although Howard did not play in any games for Alabama in his freshman year, he did travel with the team to the Rose Bowl College Football Playoff semifinal. He was reportedly set to receive a full scholarship at North Carolina Central, a historically Black college in Durham.
As of Sunday morning, a GoFundMe campaign in Howard’s name had raised over $46,000.
