Each year, fans eagerly anticipate the start of August, looking forward to the tradition of two players receiving new numbers. The number 18 is associated with National Titles and exemplifying the spirit of being an LSU Tiger. The number 7 is typically awarded to standout playmakers and has been transformed by Brian Kelly into a Louisiana award as well.

As we await Brian Kelly’s decisions on who will be awarded these numbers, a new tradition is emerging. Greg Brooks Jr., diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer last year, has continued to inspire both his teammates and fans. Brooks wore number 3, becoming a beloved figure within the LSU Football team.

To honor Brooks, LSU dedicated the 2023 season to him, wearing helmet decals with his number 3 and painting his number on the field. This year, the team will continue this tribute in a new way, with Greg Penn III switching to number 3. Penn explained his decision:

“Just being around Greg and being close to him, I really wanted to switch to his number. I asked his family about it, and they said they’d be fine with it. They even said if anyone should wear it, it should be me, so I felt honored by that and decided to make the switch.”

This gesture is a remarkable way to honor Greg Brooks Jr. and keep his memory alive within the LSU community. The number 3 should join the ranks of numbers 7 and 18, becoming a cherished tradition in remembrance of Brooks.
