Star linebacker Shaquil Barrett stunned the NFL by announcing his retirement just days before reporting to training camp for the Miami Dolphins.
The 31-year-old, who recently signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins, revealed on social media that he’s stepping away from football to focus on his family.
“It’s time for me to hang it up,” Barrett wrote. “It’s been a great ride, and I appreciate everything that came with it over the years. I’m ready to shift my full focus to my wife and kids and help them realize their dreams and catch ’em.”
The two-time Super Bowl champion admitted the news was unexpected but explained that he had been contemplating this decision for some time and now wants to dedicate himself fully to his family.
“Anyone who has caught their dreams knows the work, time, and consistency required to reach them. I’m ready to start building those skills in my kids, which will take 100% commitment,” Barrett wrote. “(I know) to some it’ll be a surprise, but I’ve been thinking about this for a while and the decision has never been clearer than it is now.”
Barrett played nine seasons in the NFL, beginning as an undrafted free agent and making his mark with the Denver Broncos, winning a Super Bowl in 2015.
He spent the last five years with the Buccaneers, earning two Pro Bowl selections, including a standout 2019 season where he led the NFL with 19.5 sacks. He won his second championship during the Buccaneers’ 2020 Super Bowl run.
Barrett’s sudden retirement leaves the Dolphins in a difficult position. He was a major offseason acquisition and was expected to be a key player in their revamped defense.
Miami lost several significant players in free agency, including defensive lineman Christian Wilkins and linebackers Jerome Baker and Andrew Van Ginkel. Barrett was expected to help fill the void as a pass-rushing linebacker.
The Dolphins still have top pass rushers Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips, but Chubb is recovering from a torn ACL, and Phillips is returning from an Achilles injury.
Miami also added pass-rushing depth by drafting Penn State’s Chop Robinson with the 21st overall pick. While Robinson has high upside, there are concerns about his NFL readiness. Barrett’s retirement now puts pressure on Robinson to contribute immediately.
As for Barrett, NFL depth charts are no longer his concern. He now turns his full attention to his family.
