Despite the New York Mets’ sporadic performance throughout the 2024 season, one aspect has been consistently troublesome: a slew of injuries.
Recently, reliever Reed Garrett landed on the 15-day injured list due to elbow inflammation, and Drew Smith had season-ending elbow surgery. Now, another setback has struck as a promising young starter joins the injured ranks.
On May 30, 2024, starting pitcher Christian Scott was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right UCL sprain, as reported by Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Scott underwent an MRI, and the Mets are waiting for multiple doctors to review the results to confirm it is a sprain and not a tear.
Scott, 25, has made nine major league starts this season, posting a 4.56 ERA with a 1.204 WHIP and 39 strikeouts over 47.1 innings. In Triple-A Syracuse, he made nine starts with a 2.76 ERA, a 0.969 WHIP, and 55 strikeouts over 42.1 innings.
To fill Scott’s roster spot, the Mets called up left-handed reliever Alex Young instead of another starting pitcher. Young appeared in three games for the Cincinnati Reds this season, pitching two innings without allowing a run and striking out two. Primarily pitching in Triple-A, he recorded a 1.19 ERA with a 0.838 WHIP and 22 strikeouts over 22.2 innings for Triple-A Louisville.
Young’s recent performance in Triple-A Syracuse included one appearance, pitching 0.2 innings while allowing a hit and a walk. With Scott’s spot in the rotation needing attention, Young will have a chance to prove himself, though his leash might be short.
