Eddie Howe previously ruled himself out of becoming the England manager but gave a very different response when Gary Neville asked if he could still be tempted to replace Gareth Southgate.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is considered a strong candidate for the England manager’s position.

Gareth Southgate stepped down as the national team boss with an emotional statement on Tuesday morning (July 16), sparking discussions among supporters about his potential successor. Howe, who has previously been linked to the role, has significantly improved Newcastle’s performance, leading them from relegation battles to a seventh-place finish in 2024 and fourth in 2023. Additionally, he guided Newcastle to the Carabao Cup final in 2023, where they were narrowly defeated by Manchester United.

In April, the former Bournemouth manager joined Gary Neville on his Sky Sports show, The Overlap, where he discussed the England job.

Reflecting on the national team, Howe said: “Talking about the [England] national team, my big memories were watching you [Gary Neville] play for England. That era was when I was forming a love for England and wanting them to do well, feeling devastated when we didn’t quite make it over the line.

“I loved that feeling of watching the national team, I was immersed in it. I love England and I hope they go on to win the Euros this summer, and I think they can.”
