It had been rumoured he wouldn’t continue with the club beyond the end of 2024.

The St George Illawarra Dragons have confirmed that outside back Mathew Feagai has signed a two-year contract extension.

Previously, there were rumors that both Mathew and his brother Max Feagai would leave the club at the end of the 2024 NRL season, as the club was unlikely to offer them new deals.

However, Mathew has recently been reintegrated into the first-grade squad, taking advantage of other players’ injuries and Zac Lomax’s State of Origin selection. This has elevated his position, making him a strong contender for more consistent first-grade appearances.

This season, Feagai has played four games, averaging 126 meters per game, and has already scored three tries. With the Dragons losing Zac Lomax to the Parramatta Eels next season and youngster Savelio Tamale to the Canberra Raiders, Feagai’s new contract extends through to the end of 2026, a move welcomed by head coach Shane Flanagan.

“We have been very pleased with the work that Mat has put in this year to push his way back into the NRL side,” Flanagan said in a statement. “He is a talented and versatile outside back who we are confident will continue to improve his game.”

Feagai has now made a total of 55 NRL appearances since debuting in Round 9, 2021. The club is also working on an extension for Max Feagai, though the deal has not yet been announced.

Mathew Feagai joins Corey Allan, Francis Molo, Jack de Belin, Tyrell Sloan, Michael Molo, Jaydn Su’A, and Moses Suli in re-signing until at least the end of next season. The competition for backline spots will intensify as youngster Sione Fainu also pushes for a wing position.
