The New England Patriots’ 2024 offseason has primarily focused on securing long-term deals for their core players rather than investing heavily in external acquisitions. Nevertheless, several current roster members are still seeking new contracts and hope to benefit from the team’s substantial internal spending.
Among those looking for an extension is defensive tackle Davon Godchaux, who is increasing the pressure on New England’s front office in the absence of a new deal.
Hopefully we can get something done that’s fair to me and my team before camp starts! I love NE, I would love to retire here but it’s has to make sense for us! What I do on the football field in the trenches most of time doesn’t show on the stat sheet but turn on the film you… https://t.co/PPH8Fvb4Ku

Godchaux stated on Twitter/X that he “would love to” finish his career with the Patriots, “but it has to make sense to me and my team.” He emphasized the need for a contract that is “fair” in value, believing that his efforts in the trenches deserve recognition despite not appearing on most stat sheets.
As a seasoned NFL veteran, Godchaux’s statement is a calculated move. By expressing his desire to stay while hinting at a lack of respect in contract negotiations, he appeals to fans and positions New England as the antagonist in this scenario.
This bold negotiation tactic could either help him stay with the Pats or not. The front office likely doesn’t want to lose a key defensive player for nothing. However, after spending heavily on more crucial players this offseason, they might be reluctant to pay Godchaux, who has accumulated 2.5 sacks and 7 tackles for loss over three years.
Making his contract frustrations public also signals to other teams that Godchaux is available. So, even if this strategy fails with New England, he might still secure the deal he wants from another team.
If the Patriots don’t adjust their stance, it seems Godchaux is ready to move on.
