The Patriots’ decision to sign former XFL guard Liam Fornadel might not seem significant at first glance, but the contract details are intriguing.
Fornadel could have a real chance of staying in New England.
Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 in Houston disclosed Friday that Fornadel’s contract is a three-year deal worth just under $3 million. Given the money, it might seem he’s just for training camp depth. However, it’s uncommon for players recently out of the UFL to get a three-year deal.
While New England won’t rely heavily on someone who hasn’t played in the NFL, it’s not entirely out of the question for Fornadel to make the roster.
The Patriots need more than just a left tackle, as a long-term injury to Cole Strange has left multiple openings on the offensive line. Fornadel, an All-UFL team member, had interest from the Green Bay Packers before signing with New England.
Discussing backup offensive linemen in June might seem unusual, but Fornadel has a genuine shot at staying.
