As NFL Training camp approaches, the Philadelphia Eagles aim to bounce back stronger following a disappointing end to their 2023 season. They made headlines in free agency by acquiring star running back Saquon Barkley from their arch-rivals, the New York Giants. Despite Barkley’s positive experience with his new team, reports surfaced this week about his father’s arrest.

Earlier this month, police reportedly arrested Saquon Barkley’s father. According to FOX News, Alibay Barkley was pulled over during a traffic stop, during which police allegedly found a loaded gun in his car.

“A law enforcement source tells me that Alibay Barkley, the father of former #Giants and current #Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, was pulled over in the Bronx for a traffic stop and was found with a gun. He could be charged with criminal possession of a weapon,” Thompson reported late Thursday night.

The incident reportedly occurred at the corner of East 140th and 3rd Ave in Mott Haven, and sources indicated that the gun was loaded.

While details remain sparse, more information is expected to emerge as the situation unfolds. Saquon has previously spoken about his father’s struggles, describing him as a significant and honest influence in his life. In a 2018 interview with Lancaster Online, Saquon shared, “My dad has been through a lot. He made it a big point when I was young: Don’t make the same mistakes he did in life. You have to respect him as a man. A lot of people can’t look their kids in the face and tell them the decisions that they made were awful and the mistakes they made were bad. That helped me.”

As Saquon prepares to join his new team, this incident could serve as a distraction as training camp begins.
