The Atlanta Falcons had been quiet on roster moves for a few days, so it was only a matter of time before something happened. That something is the signing of an offensive lineman, a move prompted by the New England Patriots releasing a player the Falcons had their eyes on.
That player is Andrew Stueber, with the team announcing the waiver claim on Tuesday afternoon. The quick move to claim him suggests the Falcons see potential, and having offensive line coach and run game coordinator Dwayne Ledford working with Stueber is certainly a positive.
Why Stueber? Drafted in the seventh round in 2022 out of Michigan, Stueber entered the league with impressive size and strength but concerns about his ability to handle NFL-level speed and complexity. He played tackle in college, but the Patriots experimented with him as a backup guard and tackle.
Injuries and his drop to the seventh round kept him off the field, as he missed the entire 2022 season and spent last year on the Patriots’ practice squad without any regular season game action. Joining Atlanta’s crowded offensive line group, Stueber isn’t guaranteed a spot, but the Falcons evidently believe he could bring strength and versatility at least through the summer. With limited roster and practice squad spots available, Stueber is someone to watch.
The addition of Stueber means the Falcons have released rookie wide receiver JaQuae Jackson. Despite a promising start in rookie minicamp, Jackson faced tough competition given the Falcons’ deep receiver lineup. His college career and brief stint in Atlanta likely positioned him for opportunities elsewhere. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.
