In recent years, the Michigan football team has excelled in the run game, largely due to their outstanding offensive line. Over the past three seasons, Michigan’s offensive line has won the Joe Moore Award for the best offensive line in college football twice, with the only exception being last year when Washington won. Despite this, Michigan triumphed over Washington in the national title game, rushing for 303 yards compared to Washington’s 46.
Maintaining this powerful rushing attack in 2024 will be challenging for Michigan, as they have lost their entire offensive line from last year and have a new offensive line coach. Grant Newsome has taken over the role, and Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore has expressed strong confidence in him, predicting he will soon become a head coach.
“He’s more than ready,” Sherrone Moore said of Grant Newsome, according to 247 Sports. “That dude is a beast. He’ll be a head coach in another couple of years too. He’s phenomenal. For a guy his age, he’s way, way ahead in terms of mental capacity, knowledge, maturity, and how he handles everything. He’s a superstar in this business, so he’s more than ready, absolutely.”
Newsome, who played college football for Michigan from 2015-2018, is well-acquainted with the Wolverines’ culture and knows what it takes to succeed in Ann Arbor.
Sherrone Moore thinks that the offensive line will reload
Michigan football has certainly faced significant losses on their offensive line, but head coach Sherrone Moore remains unfazed. He trusts in Grant Newsome and believes that the Wolverines’ offensive line will continue to be a strong unit.
“The O-line should be good,” Moore said. “Obviously, we lost guys, but that’s happened before and we managed. Trevor and Zinter couldn’t play there for 10 years — even though they probably wish they could. But we’re feeling really good about the guys we have now and the internal competition within each group. The mindset and foundation of who we are as a team are still in that room. I’m excited to see what the new guys can do.”
Though it feels like the offseason just began, college football is now less than three months away. The first glimpse of this new offensive line will come on August 31st when Michigan kicks off the season at home against Fresno State.
