The Toronto Blue Jays have fallen short of expectations at the beginning of the season, despite boasting star talents such as Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and Justin Turner. With a record of 17-20, they currently reside at the bottom of the American League Central standings as of May 9. Should they fail to turn things around, there’s speculation they might become sellers at the trade deadline.

One player drawing attention in trade talks is starting pitcher Yusei Kikuchi, who was highlighted as a potential surprise trade candidate by Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter on May 9. Kikuchi joined the Blue Jays in 2022 on a three-year, $36 million deal after beginning his MLB career with the Mariners following a signing from Japan at the age of 27.

While the possibility of a significant overhaul, including potential trades involving key players like Guerrero Jr. and Bichette, exists, it’s suggested that such drastic measures might still be premature at this stage of the season.

Blue Jays Might Be Sellers at the Trade Deadline

In 2023, the Toronto Blue Jays had a strong showing, winning 89 games and securing a wild-card spot in the postseason. Despite this, they were eliminated in the first round by the Minnesota Twins. With their talented roster, there were high expectations for a return to the postseason in 2024. However, their early struggles have cast doubt on this possibility.

Currently, the Blue Jays rank poorly in key offensive and pitching statistics. They sit at No. 26 in runs and home runs, and No. 22 in batting average and OPS. Additionally, their team ERA is among the highest in the league. Essentially, they’re faltering both on the mound and at the plate.

Given their underperformance and the contractual situations of their star players, the Blue Jays appear likely to consider trading some players for prospects. The team’s record-breaking payroll coupled with a mediocre farm system further underscores their precarious position.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic highlighted the Jays’ underperformance and noted their significant payroll alongside a lackluster farm system. With many key players nearing free agency, the team faces a pivotal moment.

While stars like Guerrero and Bichette are unlikely to be moved at this juncture, impending free agents such as Yusei Kikuchi, Justin Turner, Danny Jansen, and Kevin Kiermaier could be potential trade chips if the team fails to improve its standing. Additionally, closer Jordan Romano is also mentioned as a possible trade candidate.
