Approaching the conclusion of his tenure with the Sydney Roosters, experienced winger Daniel Tupou is being linked with a potential transfer to another club.
Having been a mainstay in the team’s backline since his debut in Round 24, 2012, Tupou is on the brink of reaching 250 first-grade appearances for the Roosters. His contributions were instrumental in securing three premierships for the team in 2013, 2018, and 2019.
Tupou has also made significant contributions on the representative stage, featuring in 18 Tests for Tonga and ten matches for the NSW Blues, including the 2022 State of Origin series.
With advancing age and the Roosters shifting focus to younger talents like Billy Smith, Tupou finds himself without a contract for the upcoming season, as his current deal expires at the end of 2024.
Recent reports from French publication L’Independant suggest that Catalan Dragons from the Super League are eyeing Tupou for the next season.
While nothing has been officially confirmed about Tupou’s future with the Roosters, speculation is rife that he might retire alongside teammates Luke Keary and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves at season’s end.
According to reports from The Sydney Morning Herald last week, the 32-year-old is contemplating whether to continue playing next year.
Reflecting on his commitment to the Roosters, Tupou expressed his affection for the club and its members, stating last year that he values every opportunity to represent them. Despite uncertainties, he remains enthusiastic about his role within the team.
As the Sydney Roosters confirm four departures for the next season, eleven players, including Tupou, are yet to secure contracts beyond this season.
