PITTSBURGH ;
The Pittsburgh Steelers completely overhauled their quarterback group in the offseason by bringing in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, along with Kyle Allen, while trading away Kenny Pickett, releasing Mitch Trubisky, and allowing Mason Rudolph to leave.
However, not everyone is entirely convinced that this restructuring will be successful. Despite the notable additions, there are concerns about the Steelers’ new quarterback lineup. ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky highlighted one of these concerns, suggesting that Pittsburgh might face trouble because their quarterbacks are prone to taking sacks.
Orlovsky pointed out the sack statistics of Wilson and Fields over the past two seasons, emphasizing that they’ve both been among the league leaders in sacks taken. He questioned which of the two quarterbacks could improve in this area, leaning towards Fields due to his younger age.
Orlovsky also raised doubts about whether the Steelers have a quarterback capable of minimizing negative plays such as sacks, fumbles, and interceptions, which were issues for Pickett and Trubisky during their time as starters.
These remarks prompted Joe Dolan to express his criticism of the Steelers’ quarterbacks on the Ross Tucker Podcast, suggesting that even with an exceptional offensive line, Wilson and Fields could still struggle with sacks.
Currently, Wilson is expected to be the starter for the 2024 season following a campaign with 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Fields will have an opportunity to compete but may be viewed as a developmental prospect given his 10-28 record as a starter.
