Alabama’s athletic department has made a significant investment in their first-year Crimson Tide football coach, Kalen DeBoer, elevating him to one of the highest-paid head coaches in the nation. DeBoer’s eight-year contract guarantees him a minimum of $87 million, with an initial salary of $10 million, surpassing what would have been earned by the retired seven-time national champion, Nick Saban, in 2024.
Additionally, the department has granted raises and extensions to basketball coach Nate Oats and athletic director Greg Byrne. The contracts, including DeBoer’s, were formally approved by the UA System Board of Trustees compensation committee.
DeBoer, aged 49, who led Washington to the national championship game in his second season, faces a $5 million penalty if he leaves in 2024, with reductions annually until 2027, after which he would owe nothing upon departure.
Byrne emphasized the importance of investing in top-tier coaches for departmental success. DeBoer’s contract extends until December 31, 2033, with incremental salary increases, culminating in $11.75 million in his final year, along with bonuses for championship achievements.
Oats’ new six-year contract ensures his salary increases from $5 million this year to $7.55 million by March 14, 2030.
