Antonio Gibson, the recently acquired running back for the New England Patriots, is impressed by the approach of the team’s new head coach, Jerod Mayo. Gibson, speaking to journalists, likened his interactions with Mayo to casual conversations with teammates, appreciating Mayo’s relatability. Mayo took over as head coach in February, succeeding Bill Belichick after his 24-year tenure.

Why 'Super Excited' Antonio Gibson Felt Patriots Were Best Fit

Gibson sees Mayo’s ability to connect and communicate with players as a positive asset in the locker room. Mayo, aged 38, had an illustrious career as a linebacker for the Patriots, including winning a Super Bowl in 2014. His transition from player to assistant coach in 2019 and now to head coach, aligns with owner Robert Kraft’s preference for internal promotions.

Choosing the Patriots in free agency, Gibson cited Mayo as a primary reason, impressed by the team’s rebuilding efforts and the youthful energy of both the roster and coaching staff. Having spent his first four seasons with the Washington Commanders, Gibson’s decision to join the Patriots marks a new chapter in his career. He amassed impressive stats with Washington, rushing for over 2,600 yards and 22 touchdowns on 642 carries.

New England secured Gibson with a three-year, $11.25 million contract following his rookie deal with Washington, where he earned $4.93 million over four seasons.
