The Chicago Bears have secured a top-tier replacement for free safety Eddie Jackson as they gear up for the official kickoff of the 2024 NFL free agency this week. On March 10, they inked a two-year deal with Kevin Byard, a two-time All-Pro in the free safety position, valued at $15 million according to reports from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Byard, aged 30, had previously met with the Bears twice before his signing was officially announced.

Despite a somewhat lackluster half-season with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023, Byard has consistently proven himself as one of the league’s premier deep-field defenders over the past few years. Pro Football Focus data shows an average run-defense grade of 80.0 over his eight seasons in the NFL. Additionally, he boasts an impressive interception record, leading the league with eight interceptions in 2017 and totaling 28 picks throughout his career.

Following the release of Jackson, who had been a staple in the Bears lineup for seven years, the team had been actively seeking a new free safety. By signing Byard, the Bears not only acquire a seasoned veteran but also manage to secure him at a significantly lower cost over the course of his two-year contract compared to what Jackson’s salary would have amounted to for the 2023 season alone.

Due to Byard’s release by the Eagles, the Bears were able to engage in negotiations and secure his signing prior to the commencement of the new league year on March 15 at 4 p.m. Eastern Time.

Kevin Byard Fits What Matt Eberflus Wants at Safety

Byard’s transition to the Eagles following the 2023 season wasn’t as illustrious as anticipated. Despite being acquired from the Titans in exchange for safety Terrell Edmunds and two Day 3 draft picks, the Eagles’ secondary struggled after his arrival, failing to find their footing.

However, the Bears are drawn to Byard for understandable reasons. While he’s slightly older than Jackson, Byard brings consistency and durability to the secondary, having started 121 games over the past eight seasons and missing only one game in his entire career.

Byard’s track record as a dynamic playmaker on the field aligns well with what head coach Matt Eberflus expressed as desired qualities for the position during the 2024 NFL Combine.

Moreover, Byard’s reputation as a leader within Tennessee’s defense resonates with Eberflus’ vision for the team. Eberflus emphasized the importance of athletic ability, range, communication skills, and ball skills in a player, all of which Byard possesses.

Furthermore, Byard’s leadership extends beyond his on-field performance. He served as a five-time captain for the Titans and has been credited with inspiring his former teammate A.J. Brown to embrace a leadership role. This aspect should be highly valued by the Bears, especially as Byard joins forces with rising star Jaquan Brisker in the secondary.

Despite New Signing, Bears Could Still Draft a Safety

The Bears have secured Kevin Byard as their likely starting free safety, but his arrival doesn’t guarantee they’ll ignore the position in the upcoming 2024 draft. Byard’s signing is a positive move, potentially replacing or even surpassing Jackson’s contributions in Chicago’s secondary. However, at almost 31 years old and with a contract that allows for an easy exit if he underperforms, it’s prudent for the Bears to consider younger, more stable options for the future.

Even with Byard’s potential success, the Bears still have motives to invest in another safety during the NFL draft. While Elijah Hicks and Quindell Johnson serve as backup choices, neither has proven themselves enough to solidify their positions in the rotation. Opting for a suitable prospect in the third round or beyond could provide depth and long-term benefits, allowing them to develop behind the scenes and eventually contribute significantly.
