For a while, it seemed McLaren might snag a podium at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, but Oscar Piastri’s hopes dwindled as he trailed behind Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes, unable to make headway. Despite the setback, Piastri gained valuable insights into Mercedes’ rear wing dynamics.
After Charles Leclerc of Ferrari overtook Hamilton, Piastri found it challenging to pass the seven-time World Champion. Despite bold attempts, he often found himself off-track, relinquishing positions.
Hamilton’s strategic pit stop on Lap 37 freed Piastri from the stalemate, allowing him to finish an impressive fourth, while Leclerc secured a podium alongside the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.
For McLaren, it meant scoring 12 points and Piastri earning the title of “Mercedes rear wing expert.”
Taking a lighthearted tone on social media, Piastri joked about his newfound expertise and points haul. Responding to Sky F1 about passing Hamilton sooner, he humorously suggested removing his own rear wing.
Even if Piastri had overtaken Hamilton earlier, he believes catching Leclerc for a podium would have been a tough ask. Acknowledging Ferrari’s superiority, he feels fourth place was the best outcome, reflecting on a well-executed weekend for the team.
