The Yankees are making adjustments in their roster by moving players to the Minor League camp to ensure more opportunities for their main players. Today, they’ve made three additional moves: Tanner Tully was optioned before the game, and now both J.C. Escarra and T.J. Rumfield have been sent down as well. However, this doesn’t mean these players won’t participate in Spring Training games. Luis Gil, for instance, was reassigned after pitching in today’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, which the Yankees lost.
Reassignments Continue For Yankees As Spring Training Rolls On
The Yankees had no plans to have Tanner Tully start on Opening Day in the MLB, despite his impressive performance against the New York Mets earlier in the week. Tully, a left-handed pitcher, was acquired in Minor League free agency after a short stint in the Korean Baseball Organization. Although he lacks velocity, he relies on precise pitching and movement, which may not be ideal in today’s game, explaining his lower position on the depth chart.
However, having depth is always beneficial, and Tully could step in if needed, providing valuable innings in emergencies. Despite his solid Minor League career stats, including a 4.10 ERA and 3.90 FIP over 805 innings, he is yet to debut in the MLB. Another addition from Minor League free agency is J.C. Escarra, who also awaits his MLB debut after playing internationally and spending his career with the Baltimore Orioles.
Among these veterans is T.J. Rumfield, a prospect acquired from the Phillies, who showed promise with a breakout season in Double-A, hitting 17 home runs in 82 games. Despite competition from Ben Rice and Anthony Rizzo, Rumfield aims to build on his success and garner attention within the organization. With his high walk rates and improved power, he aims to refine his skills further in the upcoming season at age 24, potentially becoming a standout in the Yankees’ deep farm system.
As Opening Day approaches, the front office faces numerous decisions regarding roster cuts and reassignments, indicating ongoing evaluations and adjustments.
