Rich Hill, a free-agent pitcher, made his way to Boston Red Sox spring training on Tuesday night. During an interview on the team’s radio broadcast of Tuesday’s spring training game against the Minnesota Twins, Hill expressed strong interest in returning to his former club. A Boston native, Hill has had three separate stints with the Red Sox over his 19-year career in Major League Baseball. Despite signing a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates in December 2022 and being traded to the San Diego Padres last August, Hill has a strong connection to Boston. At 44 years old, he is among the league’s oldest players and has the opportunity to be the only big leaguer born in 1980 this season. Although his performance may not match his prime years, Hill’s potential return to the Red Sox could bolster their pitching staff, especially given recent injuries to key players.
