Brisbane Broncos player Ezra Mam and Sydney Roosters recruit Spencer Leniu have spoken out about the racism incident that occurred during their game in Las Vegas upon returning to Australia.
During the match, Leniu was put on report and later charged by the Match Review Committee after Mam reported to referee Adam Gee that Leniu had allegedly directed a racial slur at him, referring to him as a ‘monkey’.
Reports emerged of a confrontation between Broncos players and Leniu at the Hilton hotel in Resorts World after the game, where Leniu reportedly verbally attacked Mam before teammate Patrick Carrigan intervened.
Mam, an Indigenous Australian, has broken his silence since the incidents, expressing gratitude for the support he has received.
Leniu, on the other hand, declined to comment on the situation upon his return to Sydney, citing restrictions.
Several NRL players, including Latrell Mitchell, Cody Walker, Chad Townsend, and Nicho Hynes, have voiced their support for Mam as the NRL continues its efforts to combat racism in the sport.
Leniu’s post-game comments to Triple M Radio suggesting that the incident was merely “fun and games” on the field have attracted scrutiny.
