NBA analysts Bobby Marks and Dave McMenamin from ESPN suggest that the New York Knicks possess enough financial flexibility to potentially acquire LeBron James this summer, all without needing to part ways with Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby.
LeBron, currently holding a player option valued at $51.4 million for the next season with the Los Angeles Lakers, might explore trade options if the Lakers fail to secure a playoff spot in 2024. Presently, the Lakers rank ninth in the Western Conference, necessitating them to win two play-in tournament games for postseason qualification.
The Knicks’ president, Leon Rose, formerly LeBron’s agent, has history with the player. LeBron considered joining the Knicks during his 2010 free agency period before opting for the Miami Heat alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.
Marks and McMenamin note that the Knicks have the financial leeway to acquire LeBron without losing Brunson and Anunoby, with a roster boasting players earning between $11.5 and $30.3 million, alongside the potential inclusion of up to eight tradable first-round picks.
Despite being the NBA’s oldest player, LeBron continues to perform at an elite level, averaging 25.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 7.9 assists this season with impressive shooting percentages. When asked about the possibility of playing for the Knicks during a February game in New York, LeBron acknowledged considering the team during his 2010 free agency period.
