Brian Jean-Mary has been named Michigan football’s linebackers coach and run defensive coordinator.
Michigan football has officially brought Brian Jean-Mary on board, according to information obtained by The Michigan Insider. He is set to assume the roles of linebackers coach and run defense coordinator for the Wolverines.
The initial report of Sherrone Moore securing Jean-Mary’s services was made public by TMI in mid-February. Following an extensive human resources process, his hiring has been confirmed as of Tuesday afternoon. Jean-Mary, hailing from Tennessee, joins defensive coordinator Wink Martindale and defensive line coach Greg Scruggs as the latest coaching additions formalized by the University this week.
Pronounced ZHAHN-muh-REE, Jean-Mary has previously coached defense at various institutions including Louisville (2010-13), Texas (2014-16), USF (2017-19), Michigan (2020), and Tennessee (2021-23).
TMI’s Sam Webb provided insights about Jean-Mary in mid-February, noting his previous connection with Jim Harbaugh’s staff aspirations post-2020 season. Despite a brief stint in Ann Arbor, Jean-Mary garnered significant respect from colleagues, including Moore.
With a coaching career spanning 24 years, Jean-Mary is recognized for his dual role as a developer and motivator. His tenure at Tennessee saw notable improvements defensively, with the Volunteers establishing an aggressive defensive identity even amidst challenges like depth issues and linebacker injuries. During the 2021 season, Tennessee ranked among the top in the nation and second in the SEC for tackles for loss, showcasing considerable progress under Jean-Mary’s guidance.
Before his time at Tennessee and Michigan, Jean-Mary served under three different Charlie Strong-led staffs, holding various coaching roles at Louisville, Texas, and USF.
