Although the 2024 campaign hasn’t kicked off, the upcoming offseason looms large for the Mets. They face a critical juncture as they prepare for the possibility of losing Pete Alonso to free agency, while also aiming for a shot at the World Series. Given their few long-term commitments, the Mets are in a position to make significant investments, potentially securing a top-tier hitter.

The Mets could sign Alex Bregman

Joel Sherman from the New York Post suggests that the Mets may consider acquiring third baseman Alex Bregman in the upcoming offseason.

Bregman’s credentials

After being drafted second overall by the Houston Astros in the 2015 MLB draft, Bregman swiftly progressed through the minor leagues and debuted in the MLB on July 25, 2016.

Since his arrival in the major leagues, the native of New Mexico has been a consistent presence in the Astros’ lineup, earning selection to two all-star games, clinching a silver slugger award, and securing a place on the 2019 All-MLB second team.

Over his career spanning 966 games, Bregman has maintained a batting average of .274 with an on-base percentage of .373 and a slugging percentage of .487, amassing 165 home runs and 588 RBIs, alongside an OPS of .861 and a WAR of 35.4. Bregman has also played as the third baseman during the Astros’ World Series triumphs in 2017 and 2022.

In postseason play encompassing 97 games, the 29-year-old has recorded a batting line of .235/.345/.445 with 19 home runs and 54 RBIs, and a postseason OPS of .790.

Why would signing Bregman make sense?

The Mets head into the 2024 season with several choices for third base, yet none have solidified their place in the lineup. Mark Vientos and Brett Baty are the main contenders for playing time at the position, but their performance in the majors remains unproven. Furthermore, with the expiration of Max Scherzer’s and James McCann’s contracts, the team will have an extra $29 million to invest.

Given the uncertainty surrounding Vientos and Baty’s readiness for the big leagues and the substantial funds available, why not consider acquiring one of the premier third basemen in the league to bolster a roster aiming for championship contention?
