On Thursday, the Detroit Lions extended their contract with kicker Michael Badgley. Although the specific terms were not disclosed by the team, Badgley’s agent, Brian McLaughlin, confirmed to reporters that it’s a one-season deal. Scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency next month, Badgley has been a consistent presence for Detroit, serving as their kicker for the final stretch of the 2023 regular season and playoffs. During this time, he demonstrated reliability by converting 13 out of 15 extra points and all four field goal attempts in the regular season, followed by a perfect performance in the postseason, making all 11 extra points and three field goals across three games. Notably, in the NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers, Badgley saw limited opportunities for field goals as the team opted for fourth-down attempts, ultimately losing the game 34-31. Badgley took over kicking duties from Riley Patterson, who was released in December, and also handled kicking duties for the final 12 games of the 2022 season. Across his NFL career spanning six seasons with various teams including the Los Angeles Chargers, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, Chicago Bears, and now the Lions, Badgley has accumulated impressive stats, boasting 98 successful field goals out of 119 attempts and 168 out of 175 extra points, totaling 462 points in 64 games.
